Tragedy struck a community in Plateau State after a late-night attack left at least five people dead and several others injured, prompting a major security response from authorities.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed that the deadly incident occurred in Gwan-Ajang village, located in the Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
According to police spokesperson Alfred Alabo, officers received a distress call on Sunday night and immediately deployed security personnel to the area after reports of gunfire during a social gathering.
Preliminary findings indicate that residents were attending an event when unknown gunmen reportedly opened fire, causing panic and bloodshed.
When security operatives arrived at the scene, they discovered several victims with gunshot wounds. Police confirmed that five people lost their lives, while others were rushed to medical facilities for treatment.
Authorities noted that the location of the attack lies near the boundary between Barkin Ladi and Mangu local government areas, which has led to varying reports about the exact location of the incident.
In response, the Commissioner of Police has ordered intensified security operations in the area, with officers working alongside personnel from Operation Enduring Peace to track down those responsible.
Police say calm has since been restored, and investigations are ongoing. Security agencies have also expressed confidence that intelligence gathered from the area could lead to arrests.
However, local community representatives have claimed the death toll may be higher than the official figure released by police.
The Berom Youths Moulder-Association alleged that at least seven people were killed in the attack and that more than ten others sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
The group further claimed that the attack disrupted a period of relative calm previously experienced in parts of Plateau State, although those claims have not been independently verified by security authorities.
As investigations continue, residents are hoping for swift justice and stronger security measures to prevent further violence in affected communities.
