U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that any country supplying Iran with military equipment will face an immediate 50% tariff on exports to the United States, with no exceptions. The declaration, made via his Truth Social platform, came just hours after he agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Tehran.
However, Trump did not clarify the legal basis for the move, especially after the Supreme Court earlier this year invalidated his use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act for sweeping global tariffs—leading to court-ordered refunds totaling about $166 billion.
In the same statement, Trump emphasized that Iran would not be allowed to enrich uranium moving forward. He added that the United States would collaborate with Iran to locate and remove nuclear materials buried following last year’s U.S. airstrikes.
Describing the situation as a turning point, Trump suggested that recent developments signal what he called a “productive regime change,” marking a new phase in U.S.–Iran relations.
