The 2027 presidential race may have taken a dramatic turn after Peter Obi announced former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate under the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
Obi made the announcement shortly after securing the party’s presidential ticket at the NDC convention on Saturday, setting the stage for what could become one of the most talked-about political alliances ahead of the next general election.
The partnership brings together two of Nigeria’s most influential opposition figures, both of whom recently joined the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over internal disagreements and prolonged legal battles within the party.
Political observers believe the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket could significantly alter the dynamics of the 2027 election, combining Obi’s strong support among youths and voters in the South-East and South-South with Kwankwaso’s considerable influence across Kano State and parts of Northern Nigeria.
The NDC leadership expressed confidence that the alliance would boost the party’s chances of mounting a serious challenge in the presidential election.
Supporters of both politicians have already begun reacting to the announcement, with many describing it as a major political development that could reshape the opposition landscape in the months ahead.
With the 2027 election drawing closer, all eyes will now be on how the new alliance positions itself against other major contenders in the race for Nigeria’s highest office.
