The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially affirmed former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election following a special convention held in Abuja.
Obi, who emerged as the party’s sole presidential aspirant during the primary election conducted on May 29, was formally endorsed by delegates at the gathering, marking another major step in his journey toward the 2027 presidential race.
The affirmation process was moved by Senator Victor Umeh and seconded by former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, after which party leaders unanimously backed Obi’s candidacy.

In a symbolic moment, NDC National Leader and former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, alongside the party’s National Chairman, Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, presented the party’s flag to Obi, officially confirming him as the party’s standard-bearer.
However, the event was not without controversy.
A mild drama unfolded when officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were initially absent from the convention venue, causing concerns among party members and delegates.
The situation prompted veteran politician Buba Galadima and other party leaders to insist that the affirmation process should not proceed until representatives of the electoral body were present.
As tension briefly mounted among attendees, repeated calls were made for the INEC officials, but there was no immediate response.
While some delegates suggested proceeding with the exercise and allowing the officials to join later, party leaders maintained that the process must follow due procedure.
Relief eventually came when the INEC representatives arrived at the venue, paving the way for the affirmation exercise to continue as planned.
With the ratification completed, the NDC has now officially placed Peter Obi at the forefront of its preparations for the 2027 presidential election, as political activities ahead of the next general polls continue to gather momentum.
