Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration over worsening insecurity, economic hardship and Nigeria’s growing debt profile.
In a statement released through his aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku accused the Federal Government of being disconnected from the daily struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians, particularly amid rising living costs and security concerns.
According to him, many Nigerians can barely afford basic necessities, while insecurity has made travelling across several parts of the country increasingly dangerous.
“At a time when millions can hardly afford one meal a day, celebrating debt figures as achievements is both astonishing and insulting,” Atiku stated.
The former presidential candidate lamented the increasing cases of kidnappings and violent attacks, saying many families now live in fear of receiving distress calls about abducted loved ones.
He further claimed that ransom payments have become a common reality in many households, comparing them to regular expenses such as rent and school fees.
Atiku also blamed insecurity for declining agricultural activities, arguing that many farmers can no longer safely access their farmlands, contributing to food shortages, rising prices and economic hardship.
While acknowledging that borrowing is not necessarily harmful when properly managed, he maintained that Nigeria’s rising debt burden has not translated into meaningful improvements in the lives of citizens.
