Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 63-year-old Chinese woman, Ting Hung Kiong, over an alleged attempt to smuggle a large consignment of synthetic cannabis, popularly known as Canadian Loud, into Nigeria.
According to the agency, the suspect, who reportedly naturalised in Malaysia, was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, after arriving from Thailand through Dubai aboard an Emirates Airline flight.
NDLEA said the elderly suspect was intercepted with two large travel boxes containing 31 kilograms of the illicit drug.
During interrogation, the woman reportedly told investigators that her daughter sponsored her trip from Malaysia to Thailand before she was handed the drug consignment for delivery in Nigeria.
The anti-narcotics agency also announced several other major drug interceptions across the country.
At the Lagos airport cargo section, NDLEA recovered 1.8 million tablets of opioids worth over ₦2.1 billion from a shipment that arrived from India.
In Enugu, operatives intercepted a suspect arriving from Sierra Leone who later excreted 185.36 grams of cocaine after being placed under observation.
Another suspect was arrested at the Abuja airport while attempting to travel to Italy with over 10,000 pills of tramadol and other opioids hidden inside his luggage.
The agency also intercepted illegal drugs concealed in bicycle carriers, soap containers and body cream packages heading to countries including the Netherlands, United States and United Kingdom.
In separate raids across Edo, Kano, Lagos and Ekiti states, NDLEA recovered large quantities of skunk and arrested multiple suspects linked to drug trafficking operations.
NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers involved in the operations and urged commands nationwide to sustain efforts against drug trafficking and abuse.
