The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced plans to make its anniversary celebration an annual nationwide event aimed at recognising outstanding corps members and staff across the country.
Director-General of the scheme, Olakunle Nafiu, made the announcement during activities marking the 53rd anniversary of the NYSC in Abuja.
According to him, the annual celebration will not only reflect on the contributions of the scheme to national development but will also reward excellence, dedication and integrity among staff and corps members.
Nafiu revealed that individuals who distinguish themselves through exceptional service and productivity will now receive certificates of merit during the anniversary celebrations.
He said the NYSC leadership remains committed to strengthening and modernising the scheme to meet current national realities and future expectations.
The DG stressed that priority would continue to be placed on the welfare and security of corps members, alongside improving communication and operational effectiveness within the organisation.
He also encouraged corps members and staff to uphold the values of patriotism, discipline, teamwork and selfless service.
Speaking further, Nafiu highlighted the impact of the NYSC’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme, saying it has helped many young Nigerians gain practical skills, become self-reliant and reduce dependence on white-collar jobs.
He also praised corps members for their role in national assignments such as elections, health campaigns, education support, census activities and emergency response efforts across the country.
The DG paid tribute to corps members and staff who lost their lives during active service, describing their sacrifices as unforgettable contributions to national unity and development.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, described the NYSC as one of Nigeria’s most respected national youth institutions since its creation in 1972.
According to him, the scheme has continued to promote unity by bringing young Nigerians from different ethnic and religious backgrounds together.
The minister praised corps members for serving in schools, hospitals, farms and rural communities over the decades.
He also called on state governors and local governments to provide stronger support for the scheme through improved welfare and better engagement of corps members.
Olawande added that Nigeria’s youth development agenda cannot succeed without the NYSC, promising continued efforts to expand opportunities for young people through entrepreneurship and digital innovation programmes.
The latest announcement is expected to further strengthen the visibility of the NYSC as it continues to play a major role in national integration and youth development in Nigeria.
