Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has officially declared his intention to contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
Sowore made the announcement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, where he stated clearly that he is entering the race to win, not just participate.
The activist, who contested the presidency in both 2019 and 2023 under the African Action Congress (AAC), said Nigeria needs fresh ideas and a complete break from the country’s traditional political system.
According to him, the current political class — both ruling and opposition parties — has failed Nigerians over the years.
Sowore argued that the same leaders and political structures are responsible for the country’s worsening poverty, insecurity and economic hardship.
He insisted that Nigerians deserve a genuine alternative capable of changing the direction of the country.
Speaking confidently about his chances, Sowore said he believes better candidates with stronger ideas should be able to win elections in Nigeria regardless of political status or financial power.
He added that the challenges currently facing Nigerians have made the need for a different kind of leadership even more urgent.
The AAC chieftain also spoke about his party’s preparations ahead of the elections, revealing that the party’s primary election is expected to hold next week.
However, he declined to confirm whether he would emerge as the party’s sole presidential candidate.
Sowore further addressed the ongoing digital membership registration exercise ordered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, the AAC has not yet submitted its final membership register because a recent court judgement allowed political parties to reopen and update their registration portals.
This will be the third consecutive time Sowore is contesting for Nigeria’s presidency on the AAC platform.
Over the years, he has consistently positioned himself as an anti-establishment candidate while criticising both the APC and PDP over governance, corruption and insecurity in the country.
His declaration is expected to add more momentum to early political conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
