The Presidency has reacted strongly to a viral report claiming that President Bola Tinubu is planning to rename Nigeria and scrap Sharia law in the North ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Federal Government described the claims as completely false and politically motivated.
According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, there is no secret constitutional agenda, no proposed “United States of Nigeria,” and no plan to abolish Sharia law as widely circulated online.
The rumour, which spread quickly across social media, alleged that President Tinubu was preparing to send a controversial constitutional amendment bill known as “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly before the 2027 elections.
However, the Presidency dismissed the report as fabricated misinformation created to stir tension across the country.
Onanuga accused unnamed political actors of deliberately pushing fake stories to create confusion and heat up the political atmosphere as Nigeria moves closer to another election season.
He stressed that constitutional amendments in Nigeria cannot happen through personal decisions or secret arrangements, explaining that such changes require approval from both chambers of the National Assembly and support from at least 24 state Houses of Assembly.
The Presidency also urged Nigerians to be careful about believing and sharing unverified political reports online, warning that false stories are likely to increase as political campaigns draw nearer.
Despite the growing political conversations ahead of 2027, the statement insisted that President Tinubu remains focused on economic reforms and governance rather than divisive political distractions.
The Presidency maintained that the viral report should be ignored entirely.
