Ghana Star’s Brilliant Backheel Goal Hands Guardiola Another Wembley Triumph
Manchester City claimed the FA Cup title on Saturday after defeating Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley Stadium, thanks to a sensational second-half goal from Antoine Semenyo.
The Ghanaian winger produced the defining moment of the final with a stunning backheel finish that secured victory for Pep Guardiola’s side and delivered City’s eighth FA Cup triumph.
In a match that struggled to produce many clear chances for long periods, Semenyo lit up Wembley in the 72nd minute after brilliantly improvising from close range to guide Erling Haaland’s cross into the far corner of the net.
The spectacular finish immediately earned comparisons with some of the most iconic goals ever scored in FA Cup finals, placing Semenyo alongside famous names such as Ricky Villa, Michael Owen, Roberto Di Matteo and Steven Gerrard.
Semenyo, who joined Manchester City from Bournemouth during the January transfer window, played a decisive role in ending City’s recent frustrations in the competition after consecutive final defeats to Crystal Palace and Manchester United.
The victory also gave Manchester City their second trophy of the season following their League Cup success earlier in March.
For manager Pep Guardiola, the triumph marked his third FA Cup title with City after previous victories in 2019 and 2023.
The Spanish coach has now won 20 trophies during his highly successful spell at Manchester City, further strengthening his reputation as one of football’s greatest managers.
Despite lifting the FA Cup, City remain focused on the Premier League title race, where they continue chasing league leaders Arsenal with only a few matches left in the season.
Ahead of the final, Guardiola jokingly remarked that he was disappointed Wembley had not yet named a stand after him despite his numerous appearances and successes at the stadium.
Questions surrounding Guardiola’s future at Manchester City also remain unresolved, with uncertainty continuing over whether the 55-year-old will remain at the club beyond the final year of his current contract.
If this eventually proves to be Guardiola’s final season at City, Semenyo’s unforgettable goal ensured another memorable moment for the manager and the club’s supporters.
For Chelsea, however, the defeat added to another difficult and disappointing campaign.
The London club entered the final without a victory in their previous seven league matches and currently sit ninth on the Premier League table with little hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Under interim manager Calum McFarlane, Chelsea produced a disciplined but largely ineffective display that reflected the frustrations surrounding the club.
Before kick-off, angry Chelsea supporters protested against the club’s owners, BlueCo, while chanting demands for the return of the club’s former identity and direction.
Manchester City controlled possession for much of the opening half but struggled to break down Chelsea’s defensive setup.
Erling Haaland threatened on multiple occasions, first firing wide after winning possession near Chelsea’s penalty area before later forcing goalkeeper Robert Sanchez into an important save with a powerful effort from a tight angle.
Chelsea relied mostly on counter-attacks and believed they should have been awarded a penalty shortly before halftime after Joao Pedro appeared to be fouled inside the box by Abdukodir Khusanov, but officials waved away the appeals.
City nearly took the lead immediately after the restart when Semenyo headed over from close range following a cross from Nico O’Reilly.
Chelsea also came close when Moises Caicedo’s header was cleared off the line by Rodri after goalkeeper James Trafford failed to deal properly with a corner kick.
However, the decisive breakthrough finally arrived in the second half when Haaland made a dangerous run down the right side before delivering a low pass into the area for Semenyo.
The winger reacted brilliantly, producing a clever backheel finish that curled past Sanchez and sealed Manchester City’s victory on a memorable afternoon at Wembley.
