Watkins Scores Brace As Villa Punish Liverpool In Dramatic Premier League Clash
Aston Villa boosted their Champions League hopes in stunning fashion on Friday night after defeating Liverpool 4-2 in an entertaining Premier League clash that further increased pressure on Reds manager Arne Slot.
The victory secured Champions League qualification for Unai Emery’s side while leaving Liverpool’s own place in Europe’s elite competition hanging in the balance heading into the final stages of the season.
Ollie Watkins starred for Villa with a brilliant brace as the home side produced a dominant attacking display at Villa Park, overwhelming Liverpool with relentless pressure, especially in the second half.
Despite concerns over the upcoming Europa League final, Villa manager Unai Emery decided to field a strong starting lineup — a decision that paid off massively after his side delivered one of their biggest performances of the season.
Liverpool, meanwhile, dropped to fifth position on the table and now remain only four points ahead of Bournemouth, who still have two matches left to play.
The latest defeat has also intensified criticism surrounding Arne Slot’s future after another disappointing performance in what has been a frustrating campaign for the Reds.
Slot has continued to insist he expects to remain in charge next season, but Liverpool’s inconsistent displays and defensive struggles have continued to raise concerns among supporters.
The Liverpool manager was again forced to cope without several important players due to injuries, with goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike all unavailable for the match.
Florian Wirtz and Mohamed Salah were also not fully fit and only made appearances from the bench.
Aston Villa opened the scoring shortly before halftime through Morgan Rogers after a brilliantly executed short corner routine created space for the midfielder to curl the ball past Liverpool’s defence.
Liverpool responded after the break when captain Virgil van Dijk headed home from a Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick to level the score.
The visitors nearly completed the comeback moments later when Rio Ngumoha struck the inside of the post, narrowly missing the chance to put Liverpool ahead.
However, the momentum quickly shifted back in Villa’s favour after Szoboszlai slipped deep inside Liverpool’s half, allowing Rogers to deliver a dangerous cross which Watkins converted from close range.
Villa then completely took control of the game as attack after attack piled pressure on Liverpool’s shaky defence.
Emi Buendia came close to adding another goal after seeing a curling strike crash against the crossbar.
Liverpool failed to properly clear the resulting corner and Watkins reacted fastest inside the box, scoring his second goal despite goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili making two impressive saves moments earlier to deny Youri Tielemans and Pau Torres.
Villa captain John McGinn later produced one of the best moments of the night with a stunning long-range strike that flew into the top corner, sealing a memorable victory for the home side.
Liverpool managed to pull one goal back in stoppage time through another Van Dijk header, but it did little to change the outcome of the match.
The result means Aston Villa are now set to return to the Champions League for only the second time since the 1982/83 season, marking another major achievement under Emery.
For Liverpool, however, the pressure continues to grow.
Should Bournemouth manage to defeat Manchester City next week, the Reds could face a tense final-day showdown against Brentford to avoid missing out on Champions League qualification completely.
