The Abia State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its fight against kidnapping and violent crimes after operatives successfully rescued a kidnapped victim, arrested a suspected gang member, and recovered an alleged ransom payment of N830,000 during a tactical operation in Umuahia.
The operation, carried out by officers attached to the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit, reportedly took place deep inside the Ogwashi Forest located in Old Umuahia, an area security operatives suspected was being used as a hideout by kidnappers and other criminal elements.
In an official statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the arrest of a 42-year-old suspect identified as Ibrahim Audu.
The police spokesperson also disclosed that the rescued victim, identified as Onyebuchi Nwaoha, a 46-year-old resident of Old Umuahia, was freed unharmed during the operation.
According to the statement, police operatives launched the raid after receiving credible and actionable intelligence regarding the activities of suspected kidnappers operating within the forest area.
The command explained that the officers strategically combed the forest while tracking the movement of the criminal gang believed to have abducted the victim.
During the operation, security personnel reportedly encountered resistance from the kidnappers, leading to a confrontation between the suspects and the police team.
However, the police stated that the suspected kidnappers were unable to withstand the superior firepower and tactical advantage of the operatives.
As pressure mounted during the exchange, members of the gang allegedly abandoned the location and fled into nearby areas in an attempt to escape arrest.
The police revealed that while some suspects managed to escape during the operation, one member of the gang, Ibrahim Audu, was successfully apprehended at the scene.
Authorities also confirmed that the kidnapped victim was rescued safely from captivity during the operation.
In addition, officers reportedly recovered the sum of N830,000, which investigators said had earlier been collected from the victim’s family as ransom payment before the rescue mission.
The recovery of the ransom money has been described as a significant breakthrough in the investigation, especially as families of kidnap victims rarely recover funds paid to criminal groups.
The police assured residents that investigations are still ongoing and that security agencies are actively pursuing other fleeing members of the kidnapping syndicate.
According to the command, efforts have already been intensified to track down the remaining suspects and dismantle the criminal network operating within the area.
The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
The police commissioner stressed that the command remains determined to sustain aggressive operations against criminal groups threatening the peace and safety of residents.
He explained that improved security can only be achieved through strong collaboration between security agencies and members of the public.
Isa further appealed to residents to continue supporting law enforcement agencies by providing timely, useful, and credible information capable of helping security operatives prevent crimes and apprehend suspects.
According to him, members of the public should not hesitate to report suspicious activities, movements, or individuals to the nearest police station.
Security experts have repeatedly stressed that intelligence sharing between local communities and law enforcement agencies remains one of the most effective tools in combating kidnapping and violent crimes across Nigeria.
The latest rescue operation has also been welcomed by residents who have expressed growing concerns over insecurity and criminal activities in some parts of Abia State and the South-East region generally.
Kidnapping for ransom has continued to pose serious security challenges across several states in Nigeria, with criminal groups increasingly targeting residents, travellers, business owners, and professionals.
Authorities have, however, maintained that ongoing security operations and intelligence-driven policing strategies are beginning to yield positive results in the fight against organised crime.
