The African Democratic Congress has reaffirmed its intention to participate fully in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, dismissing claims that it may not field candidates as false, misleading, and without legal basis.
In a statement released on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said recent speculation suggesting the ADC would be absent from the 2027 polls was nothing more than an attempt to create unnecessary uncertainty in the political space.
According to the party, despite what it described as recent distractions, its leadership remains firmly focused on building a credible alternative for Nigerians and challenging what it called the poor governance of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The ADC said its mission goes beyond contesting elections. It noted that its broader objective is to help steer the country away from what it described as worsening governance challenges, while also resisting any movement toward a one-party political system.
“The African Democratic Congress wishes to state clearly and without ambiguity that we remain committed to our mission of rescuing Nigeria from the failures of the APC-led administration and preventing the dangerous drift toward a one-party state,” the statement said.
The party stressed that reports claiming it would not produce candidates in 2027 were entirely unfounded and should be disregarded by members, supporters, and the wider public.
Reaffirming its readiness, the ADC stated that there is currently no legal obstacle preventing its participation in the forthcoming elections. It maintained that the party remains fully compliant with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act, and therefore has every intention of being on the ballot.
It further disclosed that preparations are already underway to present candidates at every level of the electoral process. According to the party, its focus is on identifying and supporting credible, competent, and nationally acceptable individuals who can provide leadership and address the country’s present challenges.
“The ADC will present candidates in the 2027 general elections—credible, competent, and nationally acceptable candidates capable of leading this country out of its current crisis,” the statement added.
The opposition party also described itself as a serious political platform with a clear national outlook. It said ongoing efforts are being directed toward strengthening its internal structures, expanding its grassroots presence, and mobilising citizens who are increasingly concerned about the state of the nation.
The ADC pointed to growing public frustration over insecurity, the rising cost of living, and limited economic opportunities as issues that continue to shape the country’s political conversation. It said these concerns have strengthened its resolve to organise more effectively across the country.
“We are not distracted by noise. We are focused on the real work—organising across the country, mobilising Nigerians who are tired of insecurity, rising costs of living, and limited opportunities, and building the structures required not just to contest, but to win,” the statement noted.
The party concluded by urging its members, supporters, and the general public not to be swayed by speculation or political misinformation. It emphasised that the task ahead requires unity, discipline, and commitment as preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With political activities expected to gather momentum in the coming months, the ADC’s latest position signals its determination to remain a visible force in Nigeria’s opposition politics and to offer voters an alternative platform in the next electoral cycle.
