Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has described the club’s historic rivalry with Liverpool as one of football’s most iconic fixtures, insisting it remains a “special” occasion regardless of the current title race standings.
The two English giants—widely regarded as the most successful clubs in the country with 20 league titles apiece—are set to face off at Old Trafford on Sunday. While neither side is in contention for the Premier League crown this season, both are firmly positioned to secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
United currently sit third in the table, holding a three-point advantage over Liverpool. With the top five teams guaranteed a place in Europe’s elite competition next season, the stakes remain high as both sides look to solidify their positions.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated clash, Carrick highlighted the significance of the fixture, describing it as one of his personal favourites.
“This is definitely one of the standout games on the calendar,” Carrick said. “There are many big matches and rivalries, but this one always carries something extra. The history behind it, the dramatic moments over the years, and the passion it brings make it truly unique.”
He further emphasized that the emotional intensity and entertainment value associated with encounters between the two clubs elevate the fixture beyond just another league game.
Reflecting on Manchester United’s progress this season, Carrick pointed to the team’s remarkable turnaround compared to last year’s disappointing campaign. The club endured a difficult season previously, finishing as low as 15th and trailing eventual champions Liverpool by a significant margin.
According to Carrick, the current campaign reflects the squad’s growth, resilience, and renewed belief.
“It shows how far the group has come,” he noted. “We’ve improved, we’ve become stronger, and we’re heading in the right direction. Coming into a game like this in a strong position, after a series of good results, is a big positive for us.”
Despite the close gap between the two sides in the standings, Carrick insisted his team is not overly focused on league permutations heading into the match.
“We understand the table and how tight it is, but this is a game on its own. Our focus is on performing well and getting the result.”
Off the pitch, United also received a major boost with the contract extension of young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who recently signed a new five-year deal with the club.
The 21-year-old England international has enjoyed a resurgence under Carrick’s leadership after struggling for regular opportunities under former manager Ruben Amorim. Since Carrick’s appointment in January, Mainoo has become an integral part of the squad’s revival.
Carrick was full of praise for the midfielder, expressing confidence in his potential and future contributions.
“He’s been outstanding,” Carrick said. “There’s still so much more to come from him. He’s young, he’s developing well, and he’s in a really good place right now.”
As anticipation builds for Sunday’s clash, Carrick’s comments underline the enduring appeal of one of football’s greatest rivalries—where history, pride, and passion continue to take centre stage, no matter the circumstances.
