Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has sparked conversations online after sharing her opinion that women should not get married in their 20s, saying many are still discovering themselves during that stage of life.
Makinwa made the remarks during a recent episode of her podcast, Toke Moments, which featured reality TV star Tacha as a guest.
According to the media personality, many women who marry early later realise they made the decision before fully understanding themselves or what they truly wanted in life.
“Women have no business getting married in their 20s. You don’t even know yourself yet. Those who did are regretting it now. Even those who are still married, if they are being honest, they will tell you that they shouldn’t have rushed it,” Makinwa said.
She argued that a woman’s twenties are often a period of personal growth, self-discovery and learning how to make important life decisions, making it difficult for many to fully understand what they want from marriage.
Reacting during the discussion, Tacha shared advice she said she learned from her mother, comparing marriage to an institution where people often have different perspectives depending on their experiences.
“My mum says marriage is like an institution. Those inside want to get out, those outside can’t wait to get in,” Tacha said.
Makinwa’s comments have since generated mixed reactions on social media, with some agreeing that people should take their time before getting married, while others believe the right age for marriage depends on individual readiness rather than a specific age.
