The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to proceed on his annual leave, with Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal set to oversee the affairs of the state during his absence.
Governor Makinde, in a letter addressed to the Assembly, said his annual leave would begin on August 10 and end on September 11, 2026. He added that he is expected to resume official duties on September 14, 2026.
The request was considered during Thursday’s plenary in line with Section 190 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which requires a governor to formally notify the State House of Assembly before proceeding on vacation or being absent from office.
The governor’s letter was read by the Deputy Speaker, Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin.
After deliberating on the request, lawmakers unanimously approved the leave and expressed confidence in Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal’s ability to manage the state’s affairs throughout the governor’s vacation.
“The House unanimously approved the governor’s request and reaffirmed confidence in the deputy governor’s capacity to provide effective leadership during the period,” the Assembly stated.
With the approval, Lawal will oversee the day-to-day administration of Oyo State until Governor Makinde returns to office after his leave.
