The Lagos State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the gunmen responsible for the killing of Toba Ajiboye, the Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos.
Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya, was reportedly attacked along Ikorodu Road while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi.
According to reports, the assailants intercepted his vehicle and opened fire, leaving the car riddled with bullet holes.
He was rushed to St. Nicholas Hospital on Lagos Island, where doctors later confirmed his death despite efforts to save his life.
The incident sparked tension at the hospital on Tuesday as supporters of the slain union official reportedly prevented police officers from accessing the facility to recover his body.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest those behind the attack.
“Investigation is ongoing to get the perpetrators. The Command has also deployed personnel to strategic locations to ensure there is no breakdown of law and order,” the police spokesperson said.
Police also said security operatives have been stationed at key locations across the state to prevent any possible unrest following the killing.
Reacting to the incident, Lagos NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye’s death as a painful loss.
In a tribute shared on social media, he said the late union leader was a loyal ally, trusted friend and dedicated member of the transport union.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable and committed ally,” Sego wrote.
He added that Ajiboye’s commitment and unwavering support for the union and its activities would always be remembered.
The police have assured residents that efforts are underway to bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
