Nigerian businessman and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has praised the African countries that participated in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying they made the continent proud with their performances.
In a post shared on his verified X account on Friday, Elumelu commended the teams for showcasing the strength and growing quality of African football on the global stage.
“Well done to all the African countries that represented our continent at the World Cup. You made Africa proud and showed the world what African football is capable of,” he wrote.
Despite his praise, Elumelu expressed concern over the standard of officiating at the tournament, warning that poor refereeing could damage the credibility of the game if left unaddressed.
“But @FIFAWorldCup needs to improve the standard of refereeing because if poor officiating continues, it will damage the game,” he stated.
He concluded by congratulating all the African teams for their efforts and performances throughout the competition.
“Congratulations once again to every African team,” Elumelu added.
His comments come as debates over refereeing decisions continue to dominate discussions among football fans and analysts during the tournament.
