A senior aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, arguing that the administration has failed to meet key expectations in the areas of security and citizens’ welfare.
Speaking during a television interview, Paul Ibe, who serves as Atiku’s media adviser and spokesperson, said stepping down from office should not be seen as a sign of failure but as a patriotic decision when a leader can no longer effectively address the nation’s challenges.
According to him, the government’s primary responsibility is to protect lives and improve the well-being of citizens, goals he believes have not been achieved under the current administration.
“It’s not a sign of weakness for a leader to resign. It’s a patriotic act.”
Ibe questioned claims that security has improved since 2023, pointing to recent incidents of killings, kidnappings and violent attacks in different parts of the country.
He cited developments in states such as Plateau, Benue, Oyo and Kogi as evidence that many Nigerians still face serious security threats.
The Atiku aide also criticised ongoing conversations surrounding the creation of state police, suggesting that current efforts to push the proposal may be influenced by political considerations ahead of the 2027 elections.
While expressing support for state policing as a concept, he argued that the timing of the initiative raises concerns.
Ibe maintained that the administration’s performance in addressing insecurity has fallen short of expectations and insisted that stronger leadership is needed to tackle Nigeria’s challenges.
His remarks add to the growing political debate as parties and stakeholders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
