Activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore will remain in Kuje Correctional Centre after a Federal High Court in Abuja postponed its decision on his application seeking the restoration of his bail.
Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the matter until June 30, 2026, after hearing arguments from both the defence and prosecution.
Sowore is facing charges filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged cybercrime and criminal defamation linked to social media posts concerning President Bola Tinubu. He has denied all allegations.
“The court fixed June 30 for ruling on Sowore’s application.”
The activist’s legal team is asking the court to reverse its earlier decision revoking his bail and to set aside the bench warrant issued against him.
During proceedings, Sowore’s lawyers argued that justice would be served by restoring the bail conditions previously granted to him.
However, prosecutors opposed the application, insisting that the defendant had not presented sufficient grounds for the court to rule in his favour.
Following the adjournment, Sowore’s counsel made a fresh oral request for his temporary release pending the court’s ruling.
The defence informed the court that Sowore was experiencing health concerns and assured the judge that he would appear whenever required.
The prosecution objected to the request, arguing that such an application should be formally filed and properly responded to before any decision is taken.
After considering both sides, Justice Umar declined the request and ruled that Sowore should remain in custody until the court delivers its decision.
The ruling on whether his bail will be restored is now expected on June 30.
