The Oyo State Government has announced a 16-hour curfew across 10 local government areas as part of efforts to tackle growing security concerns in the state.
Governor Seyi Makinde approved the restriction following recent security challenges and protests linked to the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Orire Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued by the state government, the curfew takes effect from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. and will initially remain in force for 48 hours.
“The curfew affects local government areas bordering the Old Oyo National Park.”
The affected councils include Oriire, Orelope, Irepo, Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Olorunsogo and Atiba.
The decision comes weeks after the kidnapping of dozens of pupils and teachers, an incident that sparked outrage and repeated protests by concerned citizens and advocacy groups.
During a recent demonstration in Ibadan, protesters called on both the state and federal governments to intensify efforts to secure the release of those still in captivity.
Activists also expressed concerns over the country’s security situation, urging authorities to prioritise the safety of citizens.
The Oyo State Government says the temporary curfew is aimed at strengthening security operations and restoring peace in the affected areas.
Residents have been urged to comply with the directive and cooperate with security agencies during the period.
