The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kwara State Command, says it has seized more than 5.7 tonnes of illicit drugs, arrested 985 suspected traffickers and users, and secured the conviction of 68 offenders within the last year.
The disclosure was made by the State Commandant, Fatima Popoola, during activities marking the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking in Ilorin.
According to her, the operations carried out between June 2025 and June 2026 prevented large quantities of illegal substances from reaching communities across the state.
“Kwara has become a major transit route for drug traffickers because of its strategic location between the North and South.”
Popoola revealed that many of the arrests and seizures were recorded along the Ogbomosho-Jebba corridor, which has become a major route for drug trafficking activities.
She disclosed that NDLEA operatives recently intercepted a luxury SUV carrying hundreds of kilograms of cannabis hidden in secret compartments.
The commandant said cannabis remains the most commonly trafficked drug in the state, although operatives have also intercepted substances including tramadol, skunk, Colorado, Molly, Rohypnol and Captagon.
“Drug traffickers are modernising their operations, and we must continue upgrading our strategies.”
She also expressed concern over the growing use of technology by criminal networks, noting that some suspects have used online platforms to market and distribute illegal substances.
Popoola further disclosed that the agency remains committed to rehabilitation and prevention, with several drug-dependent individuals receiving treatment and reintegration support during the period under review.
She commended the Kwara State Government for introducing drug integrity tests for students and newly recruited teachers, describing the initiative as a major step toward prevention.
Meanwhile, the NDLEA called for stronger community participation in the fight against drug abuse, urging residents to report suspicious activities and support efforts to keep communities safe.
