A violent clash between farmers and herders in Gulma Town, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, has left eight people dead, with five others rescued by security operatives.
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the incident, describing it as a tragic escalation of a dispute that reportedly began after cattle allegedly strayed into a farmland and destroyed crops.
According to police authorities, the confrontation turned deadly when a farmer and a herder became involved in an altercation, triggering a wave of retaliatory attacks within the community.
“The victims comprised one farmer and seven herders, while five persons were rescued during the unrest.”
The violence quickly spread, leading to multiple fatalities and the destruction of property, despite efforts by security personnel to restore calm.
Police said several victims were killed during the attacks, while some bodies were reportedly burnt during the chaos.
Security operatives, however, managed to rescue five individuals, including a woman, and moved them to safety.
In response to the crisis, a joint security team has been deployed to the affected area to prevent further violence and maintain law and order.
The Kebbi State Government has also imposed a curfew on the community as part of efforts to restore peace.
“Investigations have commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killings and destruction.”
Authorities say normalcy is gradually returning to the area, while security patrols and surveillance operations have been intensified.
The Commissioner of Police, Umar Hadejia, appealed to residents to remain peaceful and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
