Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has reportedly suffered the largest personal wealth loss ever recorded after a sharp decline in the value of SpaceX shares wiped hundreds of billions of dollars from his fortune.
According to reports, Musk’s net worth dropped by about $350 billion in just one week following a significant sell-off in SpaceX stock.
The decline came after the company’s shares, which had surged following its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO), began losing value over several trading sessions.
“Musk’s fortune fell from about $1.45 trillion to just under $1.1 trillion.”
SpaceX had initially enjoyed a strong market debut, reaching a valuation of nearly $2.9 trillion before the stock reversed course and shed a substantial portion of its gains.
The downturn reportedly erased hundreds of billions of dollars in market value and significantly impacted Musk, whose wealth is largely tied to his stake in the aerospace company.
Analysts linked part of the decline to investor reactions following SpaceX’s announcement of plans to raise billions of dollars through an investment-grade bond offering to support its artificial intelligence ambitions.
Despite the setback, SpaceX shares remain above their IPO price, and Musk continues to rank among the wealthiest individuals in the world.
The Tesla and SpaceX chief had recently become the world’s first trillionaire after SpaceX’s blockbuster market debut dramatically boosted his net worth.
However, the latest market correction has highlighted the volatility that often comes with major technology and growth stocks.
