England kicked off their FIFA World Cup campaign with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia, thanks to a brilliant performance from captain Harry Kane.
The Bayern Munich striker scored twice as the Three Lions survived a spirited fightback from Croatia to secure all three points in Texas on Wednesday.
Thomas Tuchel’s side took the lead early in the match when Kane converted a penalty after being given a second chance following a VAR review.
Croatia responded strongly and twice fought their way back into the game through goals from Martin Baturina and Petar Musa.
However, England’s quality eventually proved decisive.
Kane restored England’s lead before halftime with a well-taken header, taking his World Cup tally to 10 goals and matching Gary Lineker’s England record.
The second half began with another breakthrough for England as Jude Bellingham calmly finished to put his side back in front.
Despite creating several chances, England had to wait until five minutes from time before Marcus Rashford sealed the victory with the team’s fourth goal.
The thrilling encounter was a repeat of the 2018 World Cup semi-final, where Croatia famously defeated England, but this time the Three Lions got their revenge.
“Winning the World Cup is the aim,” England coach Thomas Tuchel has repeatedly stated since taking charge.
England’s attacking display will give supporters plenty of optimism as they continue their quest to win a first major international trophy since 1966.
The result leaves England in a strong position in the group and sends an early warning to their rivals in the tournament.
