The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed sadness over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while in the custody of his abductors, and has pledged to strengthen efforts to combat terrorism and insecurity across the country.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria described the late officer as a dedicated soldier who served the nation with distinction throughout his military career.
According to the military, Major General Abubakar held several key positions, including serving as the spokesperson for the Armed Forces and various military formations. He was also recognised for his contributions to counter-insurgency operations and the professional development of the military.
The Defence Headquarters explained that it had remained silent about his abduction while rescue efforts were ongoing, noting that security agencies deployed available resources in an attempt to secure his safe release.
The military said the tragic loss has further strengthened its determination to confront terrorists, kidnappers, and other criminal groups threatening the country.
“We will not relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible are brought to justice,” the statement said.
DHQ also assured Nigerians that ongoing operations against terrorist networks and criminal elements have been intensified following recent abductions and security challenges across the country.
The Armed Forces extended condolences to the family of the late general, his colleagues, and Nigerians mourning his passing.
