Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, has died while in the custody of his abductors, about two weeks after he and his wife were kidnapped in Katsina State.
The Katsina State Government confirmed the development on Saturday, stating that the retired military officer died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while being held captive.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, the government described the incident as a painful loss despite efforts by security agencies and the state government to secure his release.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed condolences to the family, describing the death as a tragic reminder of the security challenges facing the country and the need for stronger action against criminal groups.
The late general and his wife were reportedly abducted near Matazu, Katsina State, while travelling to attend a wedding ceremony.
Days after the abduction, a video surfaced showing the couple in captivity. In the footage, the kidnappers demanded the release of three detained associates and the return of livestock allegedly seized from them.
General Abubakar’s wife appealed to authorities to help secure their freedom, while the retired officer also called for dialogue and peaceful resolution.
His death has been widely described as a major loss to his family, Katsina State, and the nation.
