Nigeria Premier Football League side Rivers United have been involved in a road accident while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for their President Federation Cup Round of 16 encounter against Nasarawa United.
The club confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, revealing that the accident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed for the trip.
According to Rivers United, several players and officials sustained minor injuries in the crash, but thankfully no lives were lost and no serious injuries were recorded.
“We can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported,” the club stated.
The club added that all affected individuals are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition.
Rivers United reassured supporters that the safety and well-being of players and officials remain its top priority while expressing gratitude for the prayers and concern shown by fans and the football community.
The Port Harcourt-based side had only recently secured a place in the Federation Cup Round of 16 after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Rangers International and were scheduled to face Nasarawa United in Awka on Saturday.
With the club narrowly missing out on the NPFL title this season, the President Federation Cup remains Rivers United’s final opportunity to end the campaign with silverware.
The club said further updates regarding the team’s travel arrangements and the status of the fixture will be communicated in due course.
