The Anambra State Police Command has begun a major operation to track down armed attackers who killed two police officers in a deadly ambush along the Amansea–Ndiora–Ndiukwuenu–Awa–Ufuma Road in Orumba South Local Government Area.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday night, has sparked fresh security concerns in the state and prompted an emergency response from law enforcement authorities.
According to reports, the officers were returning from an official assignment when gunmen allegedly lying in wait launched a surprise attack on their convoy, opening fire and triggering a fierce gun battle.
Sources said the convoy of the Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Chief Ben Nwankwo, was also caught up in the incident while returning from an event attended on behalf of the governor.
Although the Chief of Staff reportedly escaped unharmed, some civilians travelling with the entourage were said to have sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire.
Eyewitnesses described moments of panic as gunshots echoed across nearby communities, forcing road users and residents to flee for safety.
One road user who witnessed the incident said he immediately turned back after hearing heavy gunfire, only to later discover the bodies of two slain police officers near a patrol vehicle when the shooting stopped.
Confirming the attack, Anambra State Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu said the command has already launched a full-scale investigation and intensified efforts to arrest those responsible.
During an emergency security meeting at the state police headquarters in Awka, the police chief directed officers to pursue the attackers and ensure they face justice.
Declaring what he described as “Operation Fish Them Out,” Orutugu vowed that the killers would not escape accountability and assured residents that security agencies remain committed to protecting lives and property.
The commissioner also warned members of the public to remain vigilant, revealing that some criminal groups have reportedly been disguising themselves in police and military uniforms while carrying out illegal activities.
He specifically advised motorists to exercise caution while travelling along the Amansea–Ufuma Road, describing the route as a growing hotspot for criminal operations.
Despite the tragedy, the police command expressed confidence that ongoing investigations would produce significant breakthroughs in the coming days.
The incident adds to growing concerns over attacks on security personnel across Nigeria and comes just weeks after the reported killing of several police officers during a terrorist assault on a security training facility in Yobe State.
Authorities say security operations have been intensified as efforts continue to identify and apprehend those behind the Anambra attack.
