Fear and uncertainty have gripped parts of Kogi State after suspected gunmen attacked a commercial vehicle in Ayegunle Bunu, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, killing two passengers and abducting 30 others.
The victims were reportedly travelling through the community when armed attackers intercepted their bus and carried out the deadly operation, leaving families devastated and anxiously waiting for news about their loved ones.
Confirming the incident, the Kogi State Police Command disclosed that a total of 30 passengers were kidnapped, including 26 men and four women, while two people lost their lives during the attack.
The shocking incident has once again raised concerns over the security of travellers on Nigerian highways, as residents and commuters continue to express fears over increasing attacks by armed groups.
The attack occurred barely 24 hours after the Kogi State Government announced the suspension of the popular Echane Festival in Ebiraland over security concerns. According to state authorities, intelligence reports suggested that activities surrounding the festival could pose a threat to public peace and potentially lead to a breakdown of law and order in parts of the state.
Governor Ahmed Ododo had directed security agencies to enforce the suspension as a precautionary measure aimed at preventing possible security breaches.
Despite the government’s efforts to strengthen security, the latest attack has left many questioning the safety of commuters and residents within the area.
As security agencies intensify efforts to track down the attackers and rescue the victims, families of those abducted remain hopeful for their safe return while residents continue to call for stronger measures to tackle the growing insecurity affecting communities and road users across the country.
