Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared that former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso will be an equal partner in his administration and not a ceremonial vice president if they win the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made the statement on Saturday while officially unveiling Kwankwaso as his running mate during the party’s national convention in Abuja.
The former Anambra State governor said his administration would be built on consultation, partnership, and shared responsibility, stressing that the era of treating vice presidents as “spare tyres” must come to an end.
According to Obi, both leaders would work side-by-side in making critical decisions that affect the country, describing the proposed administration as one founded on teamwork and inclusiveness.
“The government we intend to form will no longer be one where the vice president is seen as a spare tyre. He will be my partner. We will work together as equals for the progress and greatness of Nigeria,” Obi said.
He explained that decisions under his government would not be taken unilaterally, adding that consultation and collaboration would be central to governance.
Obi also praised Kwankwaso’s commitment to education, security, and social development, saying both men share similar values and a common vision for Nigeria.
According to him, the former Kano governor strongly believes in creating opportunities for ordinary Nigerians and building a society where everyone has a fair chance to succeed regardless of background.
The unveiling of the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket marks a major political development ahead of the 2027 election, bringing together two influential politicians with significant support bases across different parts of the country.
The alliance comes weeks after both leaders joined the NDC following their exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing concerns over the party’s future direction.
Obi had earlier promised to serve only a single four-year term if elected president, pledging to focus on reducing corruption, cutting the cost of governance, and implementing reforms aimed at improving the country’s economy and institutions.
Political observers believe the partnership could reshape opposition politics ahead of the next general election as both camps move to consolidate support nationwide.
