A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, has announced plans to formally ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate at a Special National Convention scheduled for Saturday in Abuja.
According to an official invitation issued by the party, the convention will hold on May 30, 2026, and is expected to bring together delegates, stakeholders and party members from across the country.
The invitation, signed by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, and National Organising Secretary, Hon. Theophilus Dakas Shan, stated that the gathering will formally endorse Jonathan as the party’s flag bearer ahead of the next presidential election.
Party leaders described the convention as a major step in their preparations for the upcoming polls and urged members to remain united and participate fully in the event.
Former President Jonathan, who governed Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, is widely remembered for conceding defeat and peacefully handing over power after the 2015 presidential election.
However, Jonathan has not officially accepted the nomination or publicly declared his intention to contest the presidency.
Speaking during a recent meeting with youth groups in Abuja, the former president said any decision regarding a presidential bid would require broad consultations.
“Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you and I’ll consult widely,” Jonathan said.
He further stressed that he could not simply wake up and announce a presidential ambition without first engaging relevant stakeholders.
The development comes amid ongoing leadership and political realignments within different factions of the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.
