Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed sympathy to the families of schoolchildren and teachers abducted by terrorists in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The governor shared the message while marking the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, which coincided with this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festivities.
The tragic incident occurred on May 15 after armed attackers reportedly invaded three schools in Oriire LGA and abducted dozens of pupils — including toddlers — alongside several teachers.
The attack has continued to generate fear and outrage across the state, especially after reports confirmed the killing of a teacher, Adesiyan Adegboye, during the raid.
Another teacher, identified as Michael Oyedokun, was also reportedly beheaded while in captivity, further deepening concerns among residents and families of the victims.
In a message posted on his official X account on Wednesday, Governor Makinde acknowledged the emotional pain families are currently facing during what is usually a joyful period for children and loved ones.
“As we mark this year’s Eid and Children’s Day, our thoughts are with every family awaiting the return of their loved ones,” the governor wrote.
Makinde also assured residents that his administration is working towards securing the safe return of those still being held captive.
“We are working to ensure the safe return of those who were kidnapped in Oriire LGA,” he added.
The governor further prayed for peace and safety across Oyo State during the festive period.
Reports have indicated that suspected kidnappers behind the abduction recently opened communication channels with the state government, although details of the discussions remain unclear.
It has not yet been confirmed whether Governor Makinde is personally involved in the negotiations or if representatives of the government are handling the process.
Children’s Day is celebrated annually in Nigeria on May 27 to honour children and promote their welfare, education, and protection.
This year’s celebration coincided with the Eid-el-Kabir holiday, making the situation even more emotional for many affected families in Oyo State.
The incident has continued to spark nationwide concern over rising insecurity and attacks on schools in parts of the country.
