The Federal Government has announced a 50 percent reduction in train fares across the country to help Nigerians cope with transportation costs during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The temporary fare slash applies to all passenger train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
According to the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the discount will begin on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and remain in effect until Monday, June 1, 2026.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Funsho Adebiyi.
Under the arrangement, passengers travelling on any NRC route nationwide will pay only half of the current approved ticket prices throughout the six-day period.
The government explained that the move is part of efforts to reduce the financial burden of travelling during the festive season and make transportation more affordable for Nigerians.
“The Federal Government has approved a 50 percent fare discount on all train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation,” the statement said.
The ministry also clarified that passengers who had already purchased train tickets before the announcement would not lose their money.
According to the statement, affected passengers will receive rebates equivalent to 50 percent of the ticket cost, which can be reused for train trips before June 1, 2026.
“Passengers who had earlier purchased tickets at the full fare before the announcement will be entitled to a 50 percent rebate,” Adebiyi explained.
Despite the fare reduction, the Federal Government confirmed that train schedules and timetables would remain unchanged throughout the holiday period.
The Ministry of Transportation also thanked Nigerians for their continued support of the railway system and wished Muslim faithful a peaceful Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The announcement has already sparked positive reactions online, especially among Nigerians planning to travel during the Sallah holiday.
