Former Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Mukhtar Shagari, has dismissed claims that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was pressured into stepping away from the 2027 political process.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday, Shagari insisted that Fubara’s decision was completely voluntary and not influenced by any political figure or group.
According to him, the Rivers governor is a mature and educated leader who has every right to decide whether or not to participate in future elections.
Shagari explained that Fubara reportedly made the decision after holding consultations and remains committed to his current political affiliation.
“He has not suggested that anyone forced or influenced his choice,” Shagari stated during the interview.
The former deputy governor urged Nigerians to stop unnecessary speculation surrounding the matter, stressing that choosing to step away from politics is a personal democratic right.
He added that every Nigerian politician has the freedom to either continue participating in the political process or opt out peacefully.
Shagari’s comments come amid growing discussions and reactions over reports surrounding Fubara’s political future ahead of the 2027 elections.
