Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger economic growth and improved development standards, stressing the need to raise living conditions for citizens while maintaining stability across the country.
Xi made the remarks on Thursday, October 22, according to state news agency Xinhua, urging officials to pursue both qualitative improvements and reasonable, measurable growth in the Chinese economy.
“We must resolutely promote high-quality development and continuously meet the people’s ever-growing needs for a better life,” Xi said.
The Chinese leader also stressed the importance of maintaining the Communist Party of China’s “absolute leadership” over the country’s armed forces.
According to Xinhua, he called for further efforts to strengthen the military’s political foundation, alongside reforms aimed at improving its capabilities.
Xi highlighted the importance of science and technology, skilled personnel and lawful governance in strengthening the armed forces. His remarks also emphasised the need to continue military reforms under the Communist Party’s leadership.
The speech was delivered during commemorations marking the 90th anniversary of the Long March, a major event in the history of China’s Communist Party.
The Long March took place between 1934 and 1935, when the Red Army, led by Mao Zedong, undertook a series of retreats to escape advancing Nationalist forces under Chiang Kai-shek.
Xi’s latest remarks underline Beijing’s focus on pursuing economic development while reinforcing the Communist Party’s authority and strengthening the country’s military capabilities.
