US President Donald Trump has blamed immigration for unrest in France, describing the country as “burning” and “shattered” while urging the government to tighten its migration policies.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump accused migrants from different backgrounds of contributing to the country’s problems and called on France to strengthen its border controls.
“France is burning! The immigration of people from an entirely different world, people with hatred in their hearts, has shattered that once great country,” Trump said.
“Close your Borders and take control, before it is too late!” he added.
France was still dealing with widespread damage on Sunday following protests a day earlier. The unrest reportedly left a historic town hall burned and resulted in 1,800 arrests, increasing pressure on President Emmanuel Macron six months before elections to choose his successor.
Trump’s comments came a day after US Vice President JD Vance made similar remarks about the situation in France.
“Western liberals imported the third world into France and other countries in the name of diversity and compassion. They ignored fundamental questions of assimilation and compatibility. They were told it would lead to this, and they didn’t listen,” Vance wrote on X.
“I pray that France, a beautiful country of amazing people, will stop this madness before more of its landmarks burn,” he added.
Vance, who is viewed as a potential Republican presidential candidate in the 2028 election, also connected the issue to the upcoming US midterm elections scheduled for November 3.
Republicans are not expected to perform well in the congressional races, according to the report.
