Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has called on party members to put disagreements over their primaries behind them and concentrate on winning the 2027 general elections.
Amaechi made the appeal on Friday during the inauguration of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) in Abuja, urging members to unite and work towards achieving the party’s electoral objectives.
He warned that continued disagreements over the party’s primary elections could distract members from the bigger task ahead.
“If we are still quarrelling about the party’s primary, it is over. We have to win elections,” Amaechi said.
Amaechi Calls for Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections
Addressing members of the campaign council, the former governor stressed that the responsibility before them required determination, cooperation and the willingness to overcome political challenges.
He urged party members to recognise the importance of working together rather than allowing internal disagreements to weaken their chances in the forthcoming elections.
Amaechi also cautioned against the assumption that incumbent governments were too powerful to be defeated at the polls.
“Incumbent governments often make the mistake of believing they are invincible and cannot be removed,” he said.
His remarks highlighted the importance of sustained political mobilisation and a united opposition in challenging those currently in power.
Amaechi Recalls Difficulties During Previous Campaigns
The ADC vice-presidential candidate also reflected on his experiences during earlier political campaigns under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recounting incidents in which he allegedly faced restrictions while travelling.
Amaechi recalled an occasion at Akure Airport when he said security officials stopped him from proceeding with his journey.
According to him, a military officer advised him to leave the area because his safety could not be guaranteed.
He maintained that the experience did not discourage him from continuing his political activities, arguing that opposition politicians must be prepared to face obstacles while pursuing their objectives.
The former governor also recounted another incident at the same airport in which he said he was prevented from flying.
He explained that the situation was eventually resolved following the intervention of political leaders.
ADC Members Told to Prepare for Political Challenges
Amaechi said his experiences demonstrated that political campaigns could involve unexpected difficulties requiring courage, persistence and collective action.
He urged members of the campaign council to learn from previous political struggles and remain focused on their responsibilities.
The ADC vice-presidential candidate further noted that subsequent developments had disrupted their travel arrangements, reinforcing the need for opposition politicians to remain prepared for unforeseen challenges.
He encouraged the campaign council to work collectively, remain committed to its mandate and direct its energy towards the party’s goals in the 2027 elections.
With the general elections approaching, Amaechi’s message was clear: ADC members must move beyond internal disputes, strengthen their unity and focus on the task of winning elections.
