US President Donald Trump has rejected calls for tighter regulation of artificial intelligence, describing what he called a “sick conspiracy” against AI and warning that the United States must maintain its lead over China in the technology race.
Trump’s comments came amid growing concerns from technology executives and others that rapid advances in AI could pose serious risks to humanity.
The US president also criticised Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has called for a slowdown in AI development, while stressing that excessive regulation could undermine America’s ability to compete with China.
“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social network.
Trump has repeatedly pushed back against warnings about the potential dangers of AI over the past week, arguing that imposing strict regulations in the United States could give China an advantage.
“There is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China,” Trump added in his post.
“WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS! We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so. Conspiracy Theorists, Treasonists, Traitors, and Leakers, BEWARE!”
Trump also criticised Amodei, who leads the company behind Claude, after the Anthropic chief called on technology firms to slow down AI development. His position was backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk.
“The Trump Administration has stopped AI ‘people’ from doing bad, or potentially bad, ‘things,’ like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a ‘perfect little angel’,” the US president wrote.
Trump was repeatedly questioned about the potential threat posed by AI during a weekend trip to Ireland, but continued to reject calls for new regulation.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said he had received direct feedback from technology industry insiders about the issue the previous week.
When asked whether he was downplaying their concerns, Trump responded: “No we are not downplaying but you know it’s going to be more good than bad by a lot.”
