FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has urged supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to focus on delivering victory for him in their wards, local governments and states ahead of the 2027 general election.
Wike spoke on Saturday while inspecting infrastructure projects in Abuja, where he also dismissed suggestions that he was interested in becoming Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
The minister said political positions and campaign titles were less important than the ability to deliver actual votes at the grassroots.
“Every politics is local. If you cannot deliver the president in your state, how will you say you want an election?”
Wike said he would rather concentrate on his political base than pursue a senior campaign position, recalling politicians who previously headed presidential campaigns but failed to deliver their own states. He cited Rotimi Amaechi, Bukola Saraki, Aminu Tambuwal and Simon Lalong.
“I don’t want to lose my state! I will be in my state. I have two states: FCT and my state.”
Although he continues to support Tinubu, Wike stressed that he is not a member of the APC and does not believe membership of the party’s presidential campaign council is necessary to work for the President’s re-election.
He said supporters could continue working through the “Rainbow Coalition”, a cross-party political alliance that backed Tinubu during the 2023 election.
Wike Points to Abuja Projects as ‘Campaign’
The minister also argued that completed infrastructure projects should serve as evidence of government performance rather than relying solely on campaign promises.
“What is campaign? See the campaign!”
Wike made the remarks while inspecting the Apo-Karshi Road and the 14-kilometre dualisation of the Bwari-Kubwa Satellite Town access road.
He described the Apo-Karshi Road as a long-delayed project originally awarded in 2010 before being terminated and later re-awarded to SCC following persistent complaints from residents.
Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress of work and said the contractor had assured the FCT Administration that the road would be completed by November, despite outstanding payment issues.
He also praised SCC for continuing work while awaiting payment, saying the company had shown confidence in the government’s commitment to meeting its obligations.
On the Bwari-Kubwa project, Wike said the 14-kilometre dual carriageway would improve connectivity and boost economic activity across the satellite towns.
The minister added that the FCT Administration plans to complete and commission more major projects before the 2027 election, saying the number could exceed the 10 projects initially targeted.
He expressed confidence that the administration would continue delivering critical infrastructure and fulfilling its commitments to residents.
