FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has said he would have declined the position of Director-General of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 Presidential Campaign Council had it been offered to him.
Wike made the statement on Saturday while inspecting the 13-kilometre Apo-Karshi Road and 14-kilometre Bwari-Kubwa Road in Abuja.
The former Rivers State governor said he was not interested in the position because previous campaign directors-general had sometimes failed to deliver their home states during presidential elections. He said his priority was instead to help Tinubu secure Rivers State and the FCT.
According to Wike, there is little value in holding a major campaign position if the person cannot deliver his own political base when the election comes.
He, however, said the “Rainbow Coalition” supporting Tinubu remains fully active and would continue working to secure the President’s re-election, despite Wike not being an APC member.
Meanwhile, Tinubu on Saturday constituted the APC Presidential Campaign Council, naming former Zamfara Governor Senator Abdulaziz Yari as Director-General and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma as Secretary.
The council will be chaired by Tinubu, with Vice-President Kashim Shettima serving as vice chairman.
The President’s advisers include Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, Rochas Okorocha, Abdullahi Adamu and Florence Ita Giwa.
Godswill Akpabio, Tajudeen Abbas and Mai Mala Buni were appointed deputy director-generals for the campaign in the South and North, alongside Bamidele Opeyemi and Jibril Barau.
Adams Oshiomhole will oversee mobilisation as deputy director-general, while Femi Gbajabiamila, the President’s Chief of Staff, will handle administration.
James Faleke returns as deputy director-general for election planning, coordination and monitoring, working with zonal directors Olushola Adeyeye (South-West), Ngozi Olejeme (South-South), Uche Ekwunife (South-East), Muntaqha Rabe (North-West), Ahmed Muhammed Ketso (North-Central) and Sani Danladi (North-East).
