Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has criticised the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) over its continued destruction of cannabis farms across Nigeria.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook page, Sowore described the destruction of cannabis crops as economically wasteful, arguing that Nigeria should focus on creating economic opportunities amid widespread poverty.
“You cannot burn your way out of poverty,” Sowore wrote.
The activist accused the NDLEA of destroying crops with significant economic value and described the government’s approach to cannabis as a failed and outdated policy.
Sowore called for an end to the destruction of cannabis farms and urged the government to consider legalising and regulating the plant.
He argued that regulated cannabis production could support research, create jobs, generate government revenue and promote its legitimate medicinal and industrial uses.
The activist maintained that Nigeria should explore the potential economic benefits of the cannabis industry rather than continue destroying farms.
