Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has described the outcome of the Osun State governorship election as a setback for President Bola Tinubu, arguing that Governor Ademola Adeleke’s grassroots connection played a major role in his re-election.
Momodu, who supported Adeleke ahead of the election, said the contest was largely a battle between the governor and the influence of the President.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, the ADC chieftain argued that APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji and former Osun governor Gboyega Oyetola relied heavily on Tinubu’s name during the campaign.
According to Momodu, Adeleke’s victory should serve as a warning to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Without any doubt whatsoever he (Tinubu) lost.”
Momodu said voters in Osun demonstrated that they could support their preferred candidate based on merit, regardless of political affiliations or presidential endorsements.
Momodu Credits Adeleke’s Grassroots Connection
The publisher and politician attributed Adeleke’s victory largely to his relationship with people across the state.
Momodu said he had closely followed Adeleke’s political career and believed the governor’s connection with ordinary residents gave him a major advantage during the election.
“It was obvious that this man is a grassroot man, very down to earth, loves his people.”
He also claimed that Adeleke had ensured major projects were executed across different parts of the state, which he said helped strengthen the governor’s connection with voters.
Davido’s Role in Election
Momodu also praised the role of social media during the election, particularly the involvement of Davido, Adeleke’s nephew.
He said the singer helped keep voters informed about developments during the election and contributed to awareness among young people.
The ADC chieftain described social media as an important factor in the election, saying Davido’s updates helped voters remain informed throughout the process.
Adeleke secured re-election in the August 15 governorship election with 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes.
ADC candidate Najeem Salaam finished third with 17,180 votes.
Momodu said the result should not be viewed simply as a state-level victory, but as an indication that voters could make independent political choices despite the influence of powerful political figures.
