Factional National Chairman of the Accord Party, Christopher Imumolen, has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race and declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Imumolen made the announcement on Friday during a press conference in Lagos, where he described Tinubu as the most capable candidate to lead Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to him, no other presidential aspirant currently matches the President’s leadership capacity or ability to manage Nigeria’s political and economic challenges.
“We have so many candidates that will be vying for this election, but I sincerely doubt if any of them has the capacity. We have talked about Atiku and Obi, but I don’t think they have the capacity,” Imumolen said.
The Accord chieftain praised Tinubu for taking what he described as bold and difficult decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidy, arguing that previous administrations lacked the courage to implement such reforms.
He admitted that he had previously criticised Tinubu but said he had changed his position after observing the President’s leadership style and what he described as the progress made under the current administration.
Imumolen also commended Tinubu for appointing more young Nigerians into key government positions, saying the President is helping to prepare a new generation of leaders.
He expressed confidence that Nigeria’s economy would recover despite current challenges, noting that Tinubu has consistently acknowledged the country’s economic difficulties while pursuing reforms.
The politician also warned Nigerians against believing what he described as unrealistic promises by some opposition politicians, particularly claims that complex national problems could be solved within a few months.
Explaining his decision to step down from the presidential contest, Imumolen said his move was driven by national interest rather than personal ambition.
According to him, continuity in government, policy consistency and political stability are essential to attracting investments, creating jobs and strengthening Nigeria’s institutions.
He added that he would soon begin visiting media organisations across the country to promote the achievements of the Tinubu administration and encourage Nigerians to support the President’s re-election in 2027.
