The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the personal particulars and credentials of presidential and vice-presidential candidates contesting the 2027 general election, giving Nigerians the opportunity to scrutinise the documents ahead of the polls.
Among those whose credentials were published are President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The electoral commission also displayed the credentials of their running mates, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is Peter Obi’s running mate, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who is Atiku Abubakar’s vice-presidential candidate.
The published documents include academic certificates, sworn declarations and other records submitted by the candidates in support of their nominations.
According to Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, INEC is required to make candidates’ personal particulars available to the public within 21 days of receiving them.
The move allows Nigerians to examine the submitted documents and seek legal redress if they believe any information provided is false.
The publication forms part of INEC’s official timetable for the 2027 general election, as preparations continue ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.
Campaign activities for the presidential election are expected to officially begin on August 19, in line with the commission’s election schedule.
