Billionaire Elon Musk has issued a warning to US Democrats planning to investigate his business interests, alleged conflicts of interest and involvement in the federal government if they gain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.
Musk, a close ally of President Donald Trump, made the remarks on Wednesday in response to a Politico report detailing Democrats’ plans to launch investigations should they win control of the House of Representatives.
Writing on his social media platform, X, Musk posted: “Live by the sword, die by the sword.”
He followed the statement with another warning directed at those seeking to investigate him.
“Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets,” he wrote.
Musk, one of the most influential figures in Trump’s political circle, has become a potential target for congressional scrutiny because of his financial contributions to the Republican Party, his advisory role to the president and his companies’ government contracts.
His business empire includes SpaceX, which receives government contracts, and Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer he controls. Musk is also a major financial supporter of Trump’s political movement.
After helping finance Trump’s successful 2024 presidential campaign, Musk led a controversial government cost-cutting initiative aimed at reducing federal spending. The programme also pushed nearly 300,000 government employees out of work, according to the report.
Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, but Democrats are expected to make gains in the November 3 midterm elections, with forecasts suggesting they could win control of the House of Representatives.
A Democratic victory in the lower chamber would give the party control of powerful investigative committees, which can summon witnesses and compel testimony as part of congressional inquiries.
Such a shift could place Musk under increased scrutiny over his business dealings, government relationships and potential conflicts of interest.
Democratic Representative Zoe Lofgren, quoted in the Politico report, criticised the number of potential conflicts surrounding Musk.
“The sheer number of conflicts of interest are astounding,” she said.
Musk’s warning signals the possibility of a political confrontation if Democrats gain the authority to investigate his activities. However, the proposed investigations would depend on the outcome of the elections and decisions made by congressional leaders.
