President Bola Tinubu has urged politicians seeking public office to demonstrate how they intend to finance their campaign promises, warning that commitments without sustainable funding plans could leave Nigerians and future generations bearing the cost.
The President said political leaders must be able to explain not only what they intend to deliver but also the financial implications of their proposals and whether the commitments can be maintained over time.
In a post on his X platform on Sunday, Tinubu said his administration had a responsibility to address Nigerians’ immediate needs without undermining the country’s long-term future.
“As President, I have a duty to provide relief today without compromising our children’s future.
“Every commitment must be sustainable and backed by a credible plan. That responsibility guides our decisions, including the difficult ones,” he said.
Tinubu Warns Against Unfunded Political Promises
The President argued that politicians could easily make attractive promises when they failed to explain how the costs would be covered, leaving the public to deal with the consequences later.
He challenged anyone aspiring to lead Nigeria to provide clear explanations of the funding, implementation and long-term sustainability of their proposed policies.
“Anyone seeking to lead Nigeria should be prepared to explain what their promises will cost, how they will deliver them, and whether they can sustain them.
“Promises are easy to make when the costs can be postponed, leaving Nigerians and future generations to pay the bill,” Tinubu stated.
His remarks underscore the importance of financial planning in government, particularly when leaders make commitments intended to improve living conditions or expand public services.
President Highlights Nigerians’ Experiences
Tinubu also referred to the experiences of several Nigerians, including Blessing, Ada, Abigail and Kabir, saying their stories illustrated how government investments could affect people’s everyday lives.
He further acknowledged a request from Emmanuel, explaining that it served as a reminder that more work was needed to ensure Nigerians could access essential services.
“Emmanuel, your request reminds me of the work still ahead. I know many more Nigerians like you are waiting for these services,” the President said.
Tinubu Promises Continued Push for Affordable Transport
The President also highlighted the need to make affordable transportation available to more communities across Nigeria.
He said the Federal Government would continue working with state governments to expand access to transportation, stressing that the effort must reach more people across the country.
“Our responsibility is to keep expanding access until affordable transportation becomes a reality for more communities across our country.
“That is the work we will continue in collaboration with the States,” he added.
Tinubu’s message combines a call for greater accountability from political aspirants with a commitment to continuing government efforts to improve access to essential services, including affordable transportation.
