Electricity consumers in parts of Nigeria are experiencing reduced power supply after some electricity distribution companies (DisCos) reported a shortfall in the amount of electricity allocated to their networks from the national grid.
The affected DisCos disclosed the development in separate statements issued on Tuesday, informing customers that the reduction in supply was linked to lower power availability.
Ikeja Electric attributed the reduction in electricity supply hours to a decrease in the amount of power currently being allocated to its network from the national grid.
The company said it was already engaging with relevant stakeholders in an effort to improve the amount of electricity available to customers.
Meanwhile, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) announced a load restriction affecting its Ota/Papa/Abeokuta 132kV network in Ogun State.
According to IBEDC, the restriction has reduced the amount of power available to its 33kV feeders supplying electricity to several areas.
Customers in Ayetoro, Imeko, Ilaro, Odeda, Owode-Egba, Kobape, Ifo, Papalanto, Iju, Oju Ore, Abeokuta and surrounding communities may therefore experience lower electricity supply.
“We are closely monitoring the situation with our value chain partners and will keep you updated on developments,” IBEDC said.
The development comes amid a reduction in the amount of electricity being allocated across the distribution network.
Data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that the combined allocation to Nigeria’s 11 DisCos stood at 3,998 megawatts (MW) on Tuesday.
The lower allocation means that some distribution networks may have less electricity available to supply customers, resulting in reduced supply hours in affected areas.
Both DisCos said they were monitoring the situation and working with relevant stakeholders as efforts continue to improve power availability.
