US President Donald Trump has renewed his promise to give every adult American citizen $5,000 if Republicans win control of both chambers of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.
Trump made the pledge in a video posted on X, saying the proposed payment would be funded largely by revenue from tariffs and what he described as strong economic performance under Republican leadership.
“If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate, I’m going to give all adult citizens in the United States of America $5,000,” Trump said.
He referred to the proposed payment as the “Trump dividend” and estimated its total value at about $1 trillion.
“The Trump dividend is approximately $1 trillion, but we have a record-setting $21 trillion that’s being invested in our country in just the last 15 months,” he said.
Trump argued that the proposed payment would be possible because his administration is collecting large amounts of money through tariffs.
“Republicans can do it, and Democrats can’t, because we’re taking in massive amounts of money through tariffs and record-setting economic success,” he said.
He also contrasted his proposal with what he said would happen if Democrats take control of Congress, warning that the US could face a severe economic downturn.
“If the Democrats win, you will have an economic depression, much like 1929,” Trump said.
“If the Republicans win, you will each have $5,000 in your pocket and economic success for our country like we have never, ever seen before.”
Trump also pointed to a recent $1,776 payment made to US military personnel as an example of his administration delivering a payment that had initially faced doubts.
“And remember, just recently, I gave all members of the military $1,776, just like 1776, and everyone said that was an impossible thing to do, but I did it. Everybody got their money,” he said.
“I did it, and I’d do it again.”

However, the proposal would require congressional action and has been estimated by budget analysts to cost roughly $1.2 trillion, depending on the number of eligible adults. Trump has suggested tariffs could provide the funding, although analysts have questioned whether tariff revenue alone would be sufficient.
In his latest message, Trump again linked the payment directly to the outcome of the midterm elections and ended by saying he was ready to sign the proposed checks.
“So thank you, and I look forward to signing those checks,” he said.
