Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised that his administration would consider restoring petroleum subsidy if elected in the 2027 presidential election, saying his first priority would be to tackle corruption.
Obi made the statement on Monday during a town hall meeting held in Sokoto for the Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket.
The former Anambra State governor identified corruption as a major challenge affecting Nigeria and said an NDC government would take steps to address it across different sectors.
“People are talking about subsidy but what is all about it is corruption. By removing the corruption, I assure you that we will bring back subsidy,” Obi said.
He added that his administration would seek to eliminate corrupt practices across government if given the mandate in 2027.
Obi also called on Nigerians to support NDC candidates across the different levels of government, describing the task of addressing the country’s problems as a collective responsibility.
He said the party was committed to what he described as a “politics of care and service to Nigerians.”
Addressing the country’s economic challenges, Obi said his administration would direct national resources towards areas including security and education.
“Education is our number one priority after unity and security,” he said.
The NDC presidential candidate also pledged to connect state capitals across Nigeria with railway lines, saying improved rail connectivity would support economic activities and development.
At the event, NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso said the delegation was in Sokoto to engage residents and seek their support ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kwankwaso said the delegation had earlier visited the Sultan of Sokoto, who, according to him, offered prayers for the success of the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket and conveyed his goodwill.
He also highlighted insecurity in parts of the country, particularly the North-West, where he said banditry and kidnapping remained major concerns.
“We are, therefore, committed to mitigating all these challenges and make Nigeria better,” Kwankwaso said.
The NDC governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Shamsudeen Haido, also pledged to provide good governance if elected.
The state party chairman, Bello Yabo, said the town hall gave residents an opportunity to hear directly from Obi and Kwankwaso about their plans for the country.
